SACRAMENTO — For many 10th graders, college may seem light years away — or out of reach entirely. But at Sacramento’s McClatchy High last Thursday (Nov. 3), students heard from recent high school graduates about the experiences they had as sophomores that launched them on their journeys to UC.

SACRAMENTO — �鶹��ý Chancellor Gary S. May, Gunrock and other campus ambassadors, during a visit to Natomas High School last week, encouraged students to set their sights on a university education.

"Keep dreaming big," May said April 19 in addressing some 500 grade 9 and 10 students at an assembly. "We can't wait to see you on the campus."

Staff Member Shares Story to Inspire Students at Own High School

Ana Garcia took a long pause before she spoke to more than 500 students during a �鶹��ý event in the gym of Galt High School.

“I’m taking this moment in … and I’m looking at my nephew,” said the �鶹��ý graduate and employee. “It feels so good to be home.”

Garcia helps motivate and prepare middle and high school students for higher education as assistant regional director of the Early Academic Outreach Program, or EAOP, but returning to her high school alma mater was personal.

Interim Chancellor Encourages Neighbors to Go to University

Ralph J. Hexter, interim chancellor at �鶹��ý, visited with some young neighbors last week. He encouraged about 200 juniors and seniors from Pioneer High School in Woodland — just 10 miles from the top-ranked university campus — to not only aspire to a University of California education, but also to prepare for it and work hard to achieve it. The event, organized by the Early Academic Outreach Program at �鶹��ý, was part of Achieve UC, an effort to expand the number and diversity of California students enrolled at UC's nine undergraduate campuses.
