Sandra Riddell Shannonhouse — an artist and University of California, Davis, alum whose generous contributions and advocacy for public art and historic preservation helped shape vibrant art communities — has died. Known as Sandy to friends and family, she was instrumental in sustaining the legacy of her late husband, the artist and professor Robert Arneson. She died Oct. 30 in Benicia, California.

�鶹��ý Gorman Exhibition Spotlights Artworks by a Leader in Contemporary Native American Art

The Gorman Museum of Native American Art at University of California, Davis, presents a solo exhibition of works by Rick Bartow (1946-2016), a member of the Mad River band of the Wiyot Tribe, indigenous to Humboldt County in Northern California. Bartow primarily created pastel, graphite, and mixed media drawings, wood sculpture, acrylic paintings, drypoint etchings, monotypes and a small number of ceramic works. The installation showcases artworks created from 1979 to 2015.

The exhibition runs through January 18.

The transparent, glass gallery doors of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at �鶹��ý act as a portal to another world where an echoing, ambient sound can be heard in the distance.

This world is dimly lit and guarded by two large human-like figures, their long hair made of gray and black fibers, dressed in what might be space suits of the future or the casualwear of an alien species, fused together with colorful yarn.

Photography Exhibition Documenting the Lives of California Farmworkers Opens at �鶹��ý

A traveling exhibition of nearly 90 works by labor photographer and journalist David Bacon opens on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the University of California, Davis. Organized by the �鶹��ý Labor and Community Center in partnership with the artist, the exhibition shines a light on the experiences, strength and resilience of farmworkers in Northern California.
