Memorial Day Speakers Send Virtual Remembrances

The Memorial Union may be closed, but the military personnel for whom it stands in tribute are not forgotten.

The building, honoring Aggies who gave their lives in military service, would normally host �鶹��ý’ annual Memorial Day Ceremony this Thursday (May 21) in advance of next week’s holiday. Instead, the in-person ceremony has been replaced with a video featuring some of the speakers and attendees who would have otherwise paid tribute to our country’s fallen.

Elliott ’09 would always be blasting music and energetically cleaning by 6 a.m. on trips with the �鶹��ý Alpine Ski and Snowboard Team.

�鶹��ý’ early Memorial Day observance last Thursday (May 25) started with a crowd of about 200 people on the Memorial Union’s North Courtyard and ended inside the MU with people crowding around the campus’s new memorial wall honoring fallen Aggies.

This Is Why It’s the ‘Memorial’ Union

Maj. Lawrence Phillips died in the Philippines. Capt. John Barovetto died in Vietnam. Lt. Col. Mark Taylor died in Iraq. They are among the 135 Gold Star Aggies — casualties of war — remembered Thursday (May 26) at �鶹��ý’ annual Memorial Day Ceremony.

Dozens of people took chairs or stood for the sun-drenched, late afternoon ceremony on the Memorial Union’s South Patio. Other people happened by — only to stop in their tracks after seeing the precision marching of the Army ROTC color guard, and hearing the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star-Spangled Banner.

Memorial Day Ceremony: 5 O’Clock Thursday

Army veteran and law school student Nick Chase, in his keynote address Thursday (May 26) at �鶹��ý’ annual Memorial Day Ceremony, will relate some of the moving stories from the university’s Golden Memory Book of fallen Aggies and tell a moving story of his own, from when he was a young officer in Afghanistan.

The ceremony, open to all, runs from 5 to 5:30 p.m. on the South Patio of the Memorial Union — a building that stands in tribute to our fallen Aggies. A reception will follow in the Coffeehouse.

Flag Display Ushers In Memorial Day Ceremony

One-hundred-thirty-five American flags will be posted on the Quad on Thursday (May 26), one for each Aggie war casualty, as the campus gathers for its annual Memorial Day Ceremony.

The ceremony, of course, will take place at the Memorial Union — which stands in tribute to our fallen Aggies. The flag display will go up at 1 p.m. on the Quad’s north end, just off the MU’s South Patio, where the ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. Everyone is invited.
